Description
A vibrant departure from the cloud-filled New England landscapes for which William J. Kaula (1871-1953) is best known, this radiant watercolor of gladioli showcases the artist’s remarkable sensitivity to color and light. Trained in Boston and Paris and later influenced by Boston School master Edmund Tarbell, Kaula earned widespread acclaim for paintings that combined technical skill with a poetic response to nature. Critics particularly admired his ability to capture atmosphere, noting that his work possessed a quality of “poetry and imagination” that resonated with collectors and fellow artists alike. While celebrated for his luminous skies and Monadnock-region landscapes, Kaula was also an accomplished watercolorist and served as president of the Boston Society of Water Color Painters. The brilliant blossoms and harmonious palette seen here reflect the same refined observation and love of nature that distinguished his finest landscapes.
