Bryant Park, New York City
Signed lower right: Walter Farndon / NA
Description
Situated in Midtown Manhattan, Bryant Park has served as a prime destination for residents and tourists alike for over 150 years. When it was established in 1847, the land it occupies was first called Reservoir Square, but in 1884 it was renamed in honor of poet, journalist, and abolitionist William Cullen Bryant. Today it neighbors the main branch of the New York Public Library, and both the tree-lined park and library steps provided a wealth of inspiration for Farndon during his illustrious career. In Bryant Park, New York City, he used his characteristic dappled brushwork to capture warm sunlight filtering through a canopy of flowering trees and falling on the park’s visitors; if not for the title, one would have no idea this oasis of green space was surrounded by the bustling streets of New York.
