Edge of the Woods at Night
Signed lower right: Karl Schrag
Description
“In Edge of the Woods at Night, all dynamic movement is arrested by strong verticals, and the shape of the road curves into the painting. He has consistently investigated the night. For him, ‘night is a fantastic day. All the fantasies held back in the day are freed.’ At night and in moonlight, he has walked the woods and fields of his Deer Isle farm. These he uses, and the landscape of the sky. But what for him is most exciting ‘is what is not fully revealed, the mysterious, the bottomless. The night sky, sometimes white, sometimes the deepest blue and black, is not ever the same.’ Nor is any painting the same, for lines differ, rhythms change as one moves from the wild sea to the gentle child. He detests the painter who repeats, harping on old ideas.”
