Village on Cape Ann

Oil on canvas

20th Century
$47,000

Schooled in the European academic tradition, James Jeffrey Grant brought to his canvasses an intelligent and disciplined feeling for design, form, and color, all elements on display in Village on Cape Ann. The view seen here captures an assemblage of homes and fishing shacks situated near one of the region’s many charming coves, with a pair of fishermen plying their trade on a vessel in the foreground. Composed with the artist’s distinctive brushwork, the painting reveals Grant’s fondness for depicting the town’s residents going about their lives, and exudes the tranquility and warmth of the Cape Ann region that inspired Grant over two decades of summers spent there.

Very good. The painting was recently cleaned and was lined with ethyl vinyl acetate on linen to address stress cracking in the sky and along the upper stretcher bar. There are thin lines of in-paint through the right sky, and more localized clusters of thin lines in the center and left parts of the sky, with a few very thin lines in the treetops.
