Gladys Nelson Smith greatly enjoyed gardening, thus her output from the 1940s onward included an impressive series of floral arrangements using blooms she carefully cultivated. Poppies and Hydrangeas is one such example, offering an explosion of charming color and a fascinating interpretation of the variable shapes and lines inherent to her subject matter.

Very good. The painting is unlined and was recently cleaned. There are scattered, very thin in-painted lines in the top white flower and in the background, and shorter, more sporadic thin lines/dashes in the far-left flowers, in the upper right pink flower, and in the lower center flowers. There are minor spots of in-paint scattered along the lower edge and lower left and right corners, and in-paint along the right edge of the painting.
