Still Life – Buddha

Oil on canvas
22 x 18 inches

Signed and dated lower right: Leslie P. Thompson 1918

1918
$13,500

Like his teachers and contemporaries, Thompson worked in a range of subjects including portrait and figure compositions, land- and seascapes, as well as still life. Still Life – Buddha is an excellent example demonstrating the care he took to combine items varying in color, texture and shape, and his faithful rendition of strong light and dark elements in one space. It also conveys the popularity of Asian objets d’art found in many fashionable New England homes and, astutely, also in the studios of the artists whose works they collected.

Very good. The painting is not lined and was recently cleaned. There are two small spots of retouch upper right, scattered clusters of specks in the Buddha’s belly and left leg and along the top edge of the white kettle, some random specks in the two jars at right and two small areas of finely in-painted cracks in the tablecloth lower left and lower center.
