A Sunny Afternoon, New England

Oil on canvas
24 x 20 inches

Signed lower right: George W. Drew

$4,800

Landscape painter George W. Drew was born in New York City in 1875 and studied art under John Califano and Barbizon painter Henry Pember Smith. Smith’s influence on the artist is clearly evident in Drew’s fondness for painting idyllic views of quiet country life, such as this landscape with a rustic New England farmhouse situated among verdant trees and flowering shrubs. The warm sunlight and the inclusion of a fisherman on the bridge and a trio of ducks on the path add to the charm of the scene.

Excellent. The painting is unlined and was recently cleaned. There is a minor area of in-painted lines in the center cloud, a few thin lines in the left and right sky, and three small dots of retouch in the foreground.
