A Sunny Afternoon, New England
Signed lower right: George W. Drew
Description
Landscape painter George W. Drew was born in New York City in 1875 and studied art under John Califano and Barbizon painter Henry Pember Smith. Smith’s influence on the artist is clearly evident in Drew’s fondness for painting idyllic views of quiet country life, such as this landscape with a rustic New England farmhouse situated among verdant trees and flowering shrubs. The warm sunlight and the inclusion of a fisherman on the bridge and a trio of ducks on the path add to the charm of the scene.
