Figure along a Rocky Shoreline, Gloucester

Oil on canvas
24 1/4 x 21 1/4 inches
$19,500

Although firmly planted in Ipswich, Theodore Wendel continued to explore other sites along the North Shore in search of subject matter, as seen in Figure along a Rocky Shoreline, Gloucester. Unlike other Cape Ann artists who focused on the hustle and bustle of the active fishing port, Wendel preferred to capture the idyllic side of the community; in place of schooners and crowds of fishermen, we find a lone figure perched atop a granite cliff under a canopy of summertime trees, all rendered with a pleasing color palette and dappled brushwork.

Bringing to Light: Theodore Wendel, Vose Galleries, Boston, October 19 – December 7, 2019

The painting was previously strip-lined and was recently cleaned. There is some in-paint in the sky, mostly at left, and some in-painted pentimento of a tree between the trees at left, a few spots in the lower left and lower right water, and a 4” x 3” area of brushy in-paint on the beach to the right of the bush, with a few small spots nearby.
