River’s Edge by Moonlight
Signed and dated lower left: -H. W. Ranger 96-
Description
In the fall of 1919, Vose Galleries showed some of Henry Ward Ranger’s most beautiful oil paintings, including River’s Edge by Moonlight, which at the time was simply called Moonlight. In a catalogue for the one-artist exhibition, R. C. Vose described Ranger as “essentially a colorist, and was close student of nature…The oak and willow were his favorite models, and no one has portrayed the power and majesty of the one and the delicacy of the other more delightfully than he.” With its low horizon, striking nocturnal theme, and rich color applied with bold brushwork, River’s Edge by Moonlight, painted in 1896, is a quintessential example of Ranger’s work from this period. It is wonderfully presented in a Carrig-Rohane frame that was specially crafted for the piece by Vose Galleries in 1919.

Condition
Very good. The painting is unlined and was conserved in 2005. At that time, the lower left corner was separating from the stretcher and was re-adhered with a patch and ethyl vinyl acetate. There is a line of in-paint along the lower right margin, likely due to some old frame rub, a spot in the lower left corner, and scattered areas of reduced varnish.
