Motif #2, Rockport, MA

Oil on canvas mounted on Masonite
24 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches

Signed lower left: A. Thieme

Circa 1920
$48,000
$38,400

Thieme’s compositions are infused with atmosphere, achieved through his sensitive handling of light and shadow. In Motif #2, Rockport, Massachusetts, the artist memorializes the nostalgia of a working Cape Ann harbor. The lesser known but equally active companion of Motif #1 hosts sailors and fishermen going about their tasks on skiffs and schooners tied to the end of Hodgkin’s Wharf (now Tuna Wharf). Thieme’s handling of the reflections on the water and diffused light from the partly cloudy sky show his talent for capturing the beauty of the coastal town and its hardy inhabitants.

Very good. The painting is clean and has minor, flat stable cracks, which is likely the reason the canvas was mounted to Masonite at some point in its history. There are a few dots of in-paint in the sky and in the water, and minor in-paint along the lower edge and in the lower left corner.
