Mosque, Eyup, Turkey
Signed lower right: JANE PETERSON
Description
Mosque, Eyup, Turkey is notable for the gathering of women clad in the traditional çarşaf, signifying the wearers’ adherence to old customs despite the changes occurring under Ataturk’s leadership. The robes would eventually give way to more modern attire, but Peterson’s composition offers a snapshot of Turkish life at this transformational time as well as a captivating interpretation of sunlight and shadow.

Condition
Very good. The painting was recently conserved – old tape, tape residue, and minor stains were removed, creases in the corners were stabilized and a minor tear along the lower edge was mended with rice paper, the paper was deacidified and pressed, and minimal retouch was done to tiny losses and surface scratches.
