May
Signed lower left: Marion Chase
Description
In this engaging view of a Parisian terrace depicted in May, Chase shows off her modernist inclination for design, rendering the scene using a combination of foreshortened perspective, dark contours on the tangible elements, and a limited palette of green, purple and pink, punctuated by the bright white blooms of the plants. It is a wonderful, refreshing interpretation of an afternoon spent alongside the Seine and was a highlight for several publications including the New York Times, which illustrated the painting in their October 6, 1929 spread on the opening gallery season.
