Brittany Coast
Signed and dated lower right: WALTER GRIFFIN -1894-
Description
Painted in 1894 during his time in Northwestern France, Brittany Coast captures Walter Griffin’s impressionistic sensibilities, before he began loosening his brushstrokes and painting in thick impasto swaths, as seen in his Norway and Venice scenes, and later in his Maine landscapes. The sandy pathway, running parallel to the line of bushes, leads the viewer through the painting, from the foreground to the cove, and on to the hillside town in the distance. His talent for rendering light and atmosphere is already on display in this early work, as are the rich colors he used throughout his career.

Condition
Very good. The painting is unlined and has fine stress cracks in the center and right sky, but these are stable. There is scattered in-paint in the sky, some thin lines along/near the right edge at center and top, a small horizontal area of in-paint near the lower left edge, and minor in-paint near the lower center and lower right edge
