As he had in Giverny, Wendel found plenty of inspiring subject matter both close to his home on County Street and among the fields and marshes of the family’s Lower and Upper Farms on Argilla Road. Many of these paintings show the day-to-day activity of a working farmstead, but often the play of light and color on the marshes at different times of day offered pleasing visual material akin to the series painted by Monet in Giverny.

In Salt Marsh and Haystacks under Low Clouds, Ipswich, a decidedly modern interpretation in composition and technique, Wendel was certainly drawn to the intriguing bands of color in the sky and the wisps of clouds drifting overhead. Their round forms are repeated in the glowing red orb and in the treetops and haystacks along the horizon, while the artist’s brushwork in the foreground grass energizes the scene.
