Ladies on the Lawn is an early landscape for Hopkinson, likely done between 1895 and 1905. Although the scene is not specifically located and could have been painted from his time in France or during a Harvard commencement, it demonstrates his innate understanding of light and shadow, and his growing interest in exploring a looser brushstroke, a brighter palette and a generalization of shapes to capture the essence of his subject, methods he would apply to his later watercolors.
