Description
Vose Galleries has proudly held solo shows of Liz Haywood-Sullivan’s work in 2007, 2011, and 2019, and opened a fourth solo exhibition demonstrating her sensitivity to the seasonal rhythms of the natural world in the summer of 2021. Stars and Stripes was included in our most recent exhibit and inspired the following from the artist: “Another instance of revisiting an image, however this is not a new painting of a favorite location, this is a revision of an older painting that had never seemed quite right. The original painting was titled Your Table Awaits, and now that I’ve told you the title your focus will move to the waiter in the window, who waits for their next customer. The original had a very large slanting tree trunk in the image that was quite dominant. It was a gutsy composition and a beautifully rendered tree trunk, but I was never sure that the trunk should be there. I decided to remove it and instead place a flag as a counterpoint to the stars on the awning – the title actually came to me first. Isn’t it interesting how the focus now moves outside the building and you barely notice the waiter inside?”
