In 1900, Woodward began a twenty-five year teaching career at the Rhode Island School of Design, while continuing her own studies during the summers, both in Provincetown under Charles Hawthorne and in Ogunquit, Maine, under Charles Woodbury. Woodbury was particularly influential. Like him, Woodward was a passionate teacher, and she also loved the combination of humanity and nature found at the Ogunquit beaches in the warmer months. Afternoon at the Playground depicts an urban oasis far from the shores of Maine, yet it is rendered with the sundrenched palette and lively brushwork that came to define Woodward’s best paintings.
