The mid-1910s and early 1920s were rich and prolific for Peterson; with her foreign travel curtailed during World War I, she explored and painted throughout the country, making regular visits to the Massachusetts artists’ colonies at Martha’s Vineyard, Rockport, and Gloucester, as well as Ogunquit, Maine. Reviewers were impressed with her Cape Ann dock scenes that she showed in New York and Boston, and in Gloucester at Gallery-on-the Moors and the North Shore Arts Association. A Quiet Harbor, Gloucester embodies a more tranquil aspect of this favorite seaside destination for artists and demonstrates Peterson’s summertime palette and her masterful handling of the oil medium, particularly in her translation of the reflections in the rippling current.
