Eldred’s trips abroad during the early and mid-1880s provided a wealth of material for his paintings produced thereafter, as well as for his etchings, a medium he took up with equal success. Whether depicting an aging whaleship docked at New Bedford, a caravan traversing an arid North African desert, or the crystalline waters of Venice, he devoted his energy to truthfully rendering his chosen subject while also paying heed to atmosphere and the play of light in the scene. This technique is revealed in Eldred’s The Grand Canal, Venice, in which he carefully rendered the rigging and colorful sails of the vessels and the detailed architecture of the famed city, and bathed the scene in a warm, inviting glow that accentuates the romanticism of the setting.
