"Vose Galleries has showcased Joel Babb’s realistic city and landscapes since 2006, and we are thrilled to share that the Portland Museum of Art has recently acquired one of his large Maine scenes. An exemplary Boston cityscape, Commonwealth Spring captures the historic Back Bay area at its finest – the brownstones and their copper roofs are luminous in the sunlight while the blooming magnolias lining Commonwealth Avenue herald the arrival of spring. Given that the gallery is on Newbury Street (running parallel to Commonwealth Ave.), I am very familiar with this setting and look forward to enjoying my lunches on ‘The Commonwealth Mall’ every spring. Although this scene is part of my daily visual vocabulary, I find Commonwealth Spring riveting. Joel captures these storied buildings from a unique, elevated perspective and in doing so draws my eyes to architectural details like decorative carvings and arched windows that I often miss. Thus for me, Commonwealth Spring serves as a reminder to always look up." - Cecilia Christman, Sales & Marketing Associate
