Although he proclaimed that art could not be taught, but only learned through practice, John Fabian Carlson became one of the most important teachers of landscape painting in the early decades of the twentieth century. As a result of his busy teaching schedule, Carlson could devote time to his personal art often only during the late fall and winter. He thus became known for his tonalist snow scenes, exemplified by Forest Idyll.
