F. Childe Hassam
Laundress on a Paris Street
Oil on wood panel, 13 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches
Signed lower left, circa 1886-1889
One of America’s best known Impressionist
painters, Frederick Childe Hassam likely created
this stunning Parisian scene during the late
1880s while staying in France with his new
bride. Its animated brushwork, brilliant palette
and snap-shot-like composition are all typical
of the artist’s early works, and its intimate
scale gives the viewer a sense of immediacy and
excitement. Such small works were exhibited
along with Hassam’s grand compositions
throughout Europe and the United States,
including such Boston venues as the Boston Art
Club and the Doll and Richards Gallery. Today,
Hassam’s depictions of urban life are among his
most sought-after pieces.
Laundress on a Paris Street will be
included in the upcoming Childe Hassam catalogue
raisonné being compiled by Stuart Feld and
Kathleen Burnside, and it comes to Vose
Galleries from a local private collection where
it has remained for three generations.
